The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mrs. Catriona Laing, said that the number of Nigerians applying for visas in the UK has increased recently.
Laing disclosed this on Sunday in Abuja when he attended the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) conference. He said however the UK government is aware of the situation and is in talks with the Nigerian government to avoid brain fog, especially in the health sector.
The High Commissioner said he was happy that the UK has become an attractive destination for Nigerians, especially students, adding that the UK is ready to welcome talent. "You know, obviously there are people from Nigeria in the UK. So people like to go where they have family or where they have friends. Second, it is clear that the English language makes things easier.
“Thirdly, there is education; and educated people will want to come back. I think you know, we are a country that welcomes people, we want to welcome talent, or people who come to school, or people who come to work.
“Therefore, many Nigerians will tune in to the UK and we have seen a huge increase in Nigerian student visa applications. This is partly because we changed our policy.
"So now it is easy for Nigerians, students to stay after they graduate, they can stay I wait for two years if you have done masters or doctorate, which will allow people to look for jobs but they have finished school. "We have a shortage of jobs in the UK at the moment. But we have to fix that because we don't want to be the cause of a huge brain drain from Nigeria because you also need skilled people. "So the health sector is an example where there are a lot of Nigerian doctors, both nurses and doctors in charge of national health," Laing said.
Responding to why the UK is sending asylum seekers to Rwanda, Laing said it is to promote immigration and cooperation with Rwanda. "We have a policy that we have designed to facilitate immigration and cooperate with the government of Rwanda. But now it is the subject of a legal challenge.
