The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has
announced licensing of about 164 fishery vessels to operate on Nigeria’s territorial
waters and restricted economic regions.
The Director, Fisheries Department in the Ministry Ime Umoh, during a second dialogue with
regional Economic communities co-hosted by African Union Development Agency and
African Union-InterAfrican Bureau for Animal Resources, AU-IBAR, with the
support of European Union in Abuja said this project happened to be one of the accomplishment
recorded by the Department as domestic
production of fish received a boost.
.According to Mr Ime in aquaculture government traditionally set
up fish farm estates, purposely to empower youths which comes in conjunction with
National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA).
After installation of equipment the Ministry does liaise with
the securities such as Navy and other security agencies to track fishery
activities.
